The First Baptist Church was organized
in 1847, and the members of the Church built the present sanctuary
in 1908. The educational facility was built in 1954, and an additional
wing was constructed in 1981, the year that the complex was named
for former pastor Howard Benson. Both the sanctuary and the Benson
Building have been renovated and upgraded several times since their
construction.
In 2001, First Baptist purchased the property of the late Myrl Williams,
a long time member of the Church, and the property was named the
Firehouse and designated for youth meetings and recreational space.
The Firehouse is a special evangelism and training project aimed
at reaching teenagers and other young people for Christ.
It is anticipated that additional property and facilities will be
needed in future years, and strategic planning is underway now and
will continue for many years to project future needs and the resources
required to support future development of the programs and facilities.
The First Baptist sanctuary and other facilities are dedicated to
worship, Christian education, evangelism, and other missions outreach.
At times, the membership of First Baptist has assumed heavy debt
in order to renovate and extend its facilities and to take advantage
of property acquisition opportunities when they occurred.
First Baptist is a growing and dynamic church in a rapidly developing
urban area. In order for First Baptist to carry out its mission
in the Carrollton area, the Church must provide sufficient facilities,
maintain the current facilities, and respond to various outreach
and development opportunities. IN the past, the operating funds
and cash flow have not been sufficient to meet all the needs, and
it is expected that the gap between facilities needs/maintenance
and operating funds will grow, as First Baptist seeks to meet the
spiritual needs of an increasing membership in a significantly changing
west metropolitan area. Therefore, the membership of First Baptist
established an endowment fund to supplement tithes and offerings
of the congregation, and the Church is actively campaigning to attract
contributions and bequests to this endowment. The endowment fund
is designated for maintenance and enhancement of the physical plant
and for special development and outreach projects. In addition
to the Endowment Trust, the Trustees of the First Baptist Church
are designated by the Church as an incorporated entity to receive
and manage the major gifts and donations to the Church.
